You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not….I can’t remember the rest, but isn’t Christmas the greatest of all the holidays.

My 10 year old will argue Easter is, but every November and being November does stop me from launching into Christmas, including getting the tree up nice and early.

So in preparation for this wonderful time of year, I’ve created a list of ways that you can get yourself prepared…nice and early.

Make a Christmas playlist, and stick it on repeat

Get the kids to make a Gingerbread house (or at least buy one)

Gingerbread houses make for a fun family-bonding event. If you have the patience to attempt such a family project and the self-control not to eat it along the way, then props to you.

Decorate

Decorate everything, even the dog

Watch a Christmas movie

My personal favourite is Love Actually, but Elf comes a very VERY close second.

Get your gifts sorted

Receiving gifts on Christmas is only half the fun. The only thing better than the weeks leading up to Christmas is finding the perfect present for someone you love (or these days everyone tells you want they want, job done!).

Start a countdown

Advent calendars are the best, even for big kids. Plus your kids will stop hassling you about when Christmas is, “count the bloody days on the calendar”.

Bust out the seasonal drinks and food

Nearly every respectable establishment offers some sort of special Christmas meal or drink. Mince pies, eggnog, mulled wine (if you’re in a cold climate) and never ending candy canes that start mid-November.

Get the wrapping done early

Present-wrapping is a core part of the Christmas tradition, so getting it done early will save heaps of time for all the other things you can do…Office Christmas parties and more drinking.

Be jolly

Wear a Santa hat all day, every day.

Be thankful

This is perhaps the most important rule of all. In the end, Christmas is not about spending enormous amounts of money or spoiling your kids rotten. It’s about coming together and celebrating as a family all of the good parts of life. AMEN to that!
