So if you are an event planner you will know that certain times of the year should be avoided when it comes to hosting an event. Grand finals in footy season for starters – a complete no, no. Bathurst. A lot of people love sitting in front of TV for a good part of the day watching that big event.
Let’s get straight into some other days you should avoid planning an event on, or even near.
Sporting events
Let’s be honest, any major Australian sporting event should not even factor onto your calendar when trying to nail down a date for an event. Sports fans are some of the passionate people on this earth and will not think twice about not turning up to their own nuptials late if it means missing out on a grand final day.
If you plan your event on any major sports event, I think it’s fair to say your attendance will be quite low, be it grooms, attendees and guests will not turn up or even bother to RSVP.
National holidays
Australia Day, Anzac Day, hell even the Queen’s birthday is out. These days are reserved for getting p*#$ed on the beach and celebrating all that is good about our great country. These days are reserved for friends and family, not conferences and tradeshows.
The rainy season
If you’re planning on hosting an outdoor summer rocking music festival – keep an eye on the weather. Rainy season is generally from November through to February (peak summer). Pay close attention to the weather, unless you live in Britain and you’re used to being wet for 12 hours and covered in mud. You may want to reschedule if it’s going to pour down.
Other events on
Do not overlook competing events in the same venue or area. Do your research to find out what is happening to avoid any conflicting clash that could result in a traffic jam, not enough parking spaces, not enough restrooms available, sharing of common areas or just a competing event. You want everyone at your event, not competing with another event for attendance.
There are certain days of the year on which you should avoid running an event. Special occasions, holidays, sports championships and national holidays. Leave people to their holidays, they are well-deserved, and having to turn up to a corporate event or tradeshow would be a total bummer for them, not to mention possibly an unsuccessful event for you.
