If you ‘re an Event Planner or working in Event Management in some role or another, you’ve probably figured out by now you don’t have a traditional 9-5 job, which can be a good…or a bad thing.

The traditional 9-5 job has become very blurred and being an Event Planner, it’s even more blurry with just how many hours you do in a working week.

Let’s take a look at why a traditional working week does not fit into Event Management.

First to arrive, last to leave

Even if your event starts at 10am in the morning you will still need to get there as early as possible to set up. It is not always possible to get into the venue the day before to have access – and at the end of your event you’re still there for the take down process and clean up.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t know of one event planner who doesn’t want to be the first to arrive and the last to leave. While it can lead to long days, you know the job is done, and done right.

Busy days

Expect to be super busy in the days leading up to an event.  Overtime is expected, hell, it’s a given to ensure everything goes to plan. You may find you start at 7:30am only to finish at 10pm at night.

Events outside of business hours

Most events happen in people’s free time. Evenings, weekends and sometimes overnight. This means giving up your free time for others.

Flexibility and dedication

Whatever role you play in Event Management you need to be flexible and be dedicated to your work. You can work mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and whenever the boss tell you to really.

Global clients/events

This is a big issue for event planners that have to deal with multiple partners and providers around the globe. Technology has allowed the events industry to remove the barriers of distance to do business, when and where it needs to take place.

Don’t kill the creativity

Event planners need to think creatively and this isn’t always something that happens on demand. So being constrained to set hours may mean you have to leave the office in the middle of a planning or design process and ruin your flow. For creative beings a personalised and flexible schedule works best. For event staff to be creative and give 100% to this demanding job needs to break away from the rigid 8 hour working day.
