Every bride to be knows there is a clear plan of attack when planning a wedding. The execution from start to finish is no easy feat and one that is never taken lightly, as all Bridzillas will tell you. However some brides fall into the trap of wasting money, a wedding devoid of personality or a really bad MC.

The next 12-18 months you will be making so many decisions; fashion, food, decor, guests, drinks, it all has to be planned and all eyes are on you. It is a lot of fun, but it can also make your head spin.

Here are 10 mistakes to avoid when planning a wedding.

1. No personality

A lack of the couple’s own personality is a huge mistake when planning a wedding. You can definitely pick a wedding with the standard décor around or it doesn't seem as if the couple had a hand in any of the décor, menu, or music, this is the most important day of your life - it should reflect your life.

2. Wasting money

The wedding industry is just that - an industry. So while there is a lot of good advice out there, there is also advice from people who'll profit from it.  Make choices that reflect your taste and style, not fluffy wedding stuff you don’t really need.

3. The weather

Thinking "it could never rain on my wedding day" is something every bride should now plan for. So many couples forget to plan for things going wrong. If you're having an outdoor wedding, make sure that you have an alternate location in case of rain.

4. Bossy family

Don’t let anyone talk you into something you’re not sure about. There’s a lot of peer pressure when it comes to weddings, and it’s easy to let your mum or the in laws talk you into a wedding dress you’re not in love with or invitations that are too pricey. Stick to your guns when something is important to you.

5. Doing it yourself

Sure, on paper doing it by yourself might seem like a great way to cut costs, but if you really think about it, do you really want to be putting on chair covers, cutting fresh flowers for centrepieces and making you and your family rush around like crazy people? No! Hire someone to do the donkey work.

6. That dress will fit me on the day

Ordering a smaller dress size based on your wedding weight goal is absolutely a NO!  It is easier to take a dress in and make it look good than it is to take it out. Order the dress in your normal size and set a goal to have it taken in.

7. Get a good photographer

Photography is one of the most important parts of your wedding day. The saying, “you get what you pay for,” rings true. Years down the road, you will want to look back at your wedding photos, and think that was the most perfect day. You deserve a photographer that will capture your day in a way that will allow you to relive the moment again and again. Photography is an investment, and is worth every single penny.

8. Try before you buy

Booking a product or service without a trial, is, well, a bad idea – Whether you are trying a new hair salon, booking a makeup artist, or trying a new product for the first time, make sure it is tried and tested long before your wedding date.

9. What about your guests

The time between the ceremony and the reception can feel like a lifetime to hungry and parched guests. Plan ahead and make sure there is enough shade, food and champagne to help kill time while you're busy with photos.

10. Make time for everyone

Make sure you take time to mingle with all your guests, especially those that you don’t see often. Every guest there will feel warm and mushy if you make time for them in your busy schedule for a quick catch up.

In the end, it’s one day, and no matter how many mistakes you make during the planning, it’s the resulting marriage that really counts.
