Tired of nursing that weekend hangover? Kids bugging you to do something other than Southbank? Discover the hidden gem that is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

Believe it or not Brisbane has two sets of gardens, Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coo-tha not to be confused with the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens in the CBD.

Read on to discover how these gardens are lawns and flower pots apart.

Brisbane Botanic Gardens (my favourite and the gardens we are looking at) were established in the 70’s and originally called the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. However the River City already had the Brisbane City Botanical Gardens located smack bang in the CBD – so why two gardens, council asked the same question?

Council cleverly decided that the Botanic Gardens Mt Coo-tha would be redeveloped, renamed and officially reopened in 1976 - enter the new Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of unsurpassed premier subtropical gardens.

What is there not to do here?

Every part of these lush gardens offer visitors a living museum of exotic plants and living organisms.

Don’t miss the Hide ‘n’ Seek Children’s Trail – set in the shady rainforest where you and your kids can spot all the hidden surprises – keep your eyes peeled for the bats.

Another must see at the gardens and an absolute favourite of everyone who visits is the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium – amazing entertainment/education for children and adults.

Learn about the wonders of our universe with spectacular visuals entering the Cosmic Skydome, Display Zone, Mini Theatre and Observatory.

There are endless events and activities for the whole family to enjoy.  Or if meandering around is more your style, grab a map, choose a pathway and say goodbye to the city noise.

If you are after something to do other than lazing about with a picnic, then simply visit the ‘what’s on’ page on Council’s website, search for an event, date and age range and like magic an event pops up.

Beautiful, relaxing and best of all….free.
