The last hurrah of the festive season, the one night of the year the whole world parties together.

Ladies it is also the one night you can also get away with sparkles, glitter and sequins. Here is a little blog on how to wear the sparkly stuff on New Year’s Eve.

As girly girls we all have a desire to look like a princess or at the very least a supermodel on our special night out and if the runways for summer would have it, sequins and glitter have been embraced with such panache it only seems fitting we get into the magic and sparkle for the festive season too. But remember those thoroughbreds trotting down the runway are not mere mortals like us.

Be warned - dressing in sequins and glitter doesn’t make you Anne Hathaway (Princess Diaries), you’re not going to meet Prince Charming this New Year’s Eve and if you’re not careful people may as well point you in the direction of a six year old's birthday party, because that’s how stupid you might end up looking if you don’t nail it.

However that being said this New Years Eve is all about high octane shine. See these seasons’ tips to wear the glitziest pieces from shimmery tops, to glimmering pants and sexy jackets that embrace the sparkle.

The New Year’s Eve party dress

New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to shine and over dress and one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd at a party is by wearing a sequin party dress to really amp it up. If sequins are not your thing go for something pretty like a metallic dress or a dress that balances the sparkle of the sequins with a very simple and elegant design.

A t-shirt dress is one of the understated ways that you can wear a sequin dress. Look for sequins that lie flat against the dress with an interesting pattern or design. And don’t worry about being too loud with your dress; New Year’s Eve is the night of excess.

The top

Wearing a sequinned tank or crop-top with a classic pencil skirt creates a look that is ladylike, cosy and super sparkly chic.  Vintage tops are also a classic interpretation on the sparkle. Try an understated black sequin top with some little pearl detail with black capri pants. Try a batwing shimmery top with tailored black trousers or a black mini skirt. When wearing sparkle the trick is not to look like a Christmas tree, so either sparkly on top or sparkly on the bottom.

The jacket

If magic and sparkle is not your thing this New Year’s Eve, try a glittery metallic jacket worn on the shoulders. A great option for those looking to add a little sparkle without going overboard.

The shoes

High heels will jazz up any festive party attire. However think before you buy. Your heels need to compliment your outfit so if you already have a lot of sparkle a touch of elegance is what you’re after. Try a simple black strap heel that would go nicely with a black sequined dress or a pair of jeans and sparkly top.

The accessories

Nope sorry, not wearing any of that is your stance on the whole festive dressing option; why not try some shiny metallic shoes or a sparkly mirrored clutch.

The final touch to any party outfit is the bag in which you choose to carry your essentials in. The little added bit of sparkle will look sophisticated, with a gold trim, sequins or glitter.

Go on, just a little. Not to mention looking stylish and suave your little clutch is fairly small and will not be a menace when trying to have a few drinks, a dance and a fall over on the way home after too many cocktails.

Avoid makeup glitter

On fancy dress occasions this is fine. Glitter will make you look like a sexy unicorn or a magnificent butterfly, that’s fancy dress though. If you plaster it on for your night out you might end up looking like you got lost in the arts and crafts section. You can sparkle, but you’re not a princess or a unicorn.
