You may still be weary from the Christmas / New Year’s celebrations, but there is one more big excuse for a party just around the corner, Australia Day.

This national holiday marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the first fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, and is a day when we can come together as a nation to celebrate what is so great about Australia and being Australian.

Australians celebrate Australia Day in many ways, but it’s regarded as a relaxed day best enjoyed with family and friends. So here are some essential tips on how to make this year go off with a bang and a day to remember.

Fire up the barbie

It might sound like a cliché, but as the old cliché goes, most clichés are true.

So getting the bbq going surrounded by your nearest and dearest is a great way to celebrate Australia Day.  You could go with the traditional snags or steak, or maybe look to our coat of arms for gastronomical inspiration and cook up some kangaroo steaks.  And for dessert, a pav.

Go surfing / visit the beach

There is nothing more Australian than getting a few waves on Australia day, if you are lucky enough to live close to the beach.  Sure it may be more crowded than usual, so get in early, don your green and gold zinc and enjoy our fantastic climate and warm waters.

Watch the cricket

Just have it on in the background.  Enough said.

Wear Australian colours and raise the flag

Display your allegiance to this great country by dressing up in your chosen Australian-themed garb.  Stick up some flags around the place and enjoy that sense of pride.

Check your local events website

There will be lots going on, so get out there any revel in the many free events organised throughout Australia.

Visit another Australian city / place of interest

It can be tempting to just enjoy what your local area has to offer, but why not visit somewhere else in Australia and discover how they mark this special day?

Fireworks

Australians love a spectacular fireworks display and some of the biggest and best are on Australia Day. In Brisbane, head to The Parklands at South Bank to hear music, play with interactive art installations, swim at Australia’s only inner-city man-made beach and watch the spectacular evening fireworks.

One of the best things about Australia is the cultural diversity and amazing natural beauty on offer, so what better time to drink it all in that Australia Day itself.

Whatever you choose to do, have fun, be safe and above all Happy Australia Day!
