If you’re thinking of becoming an event planner, there are a few things you should know first. A job as an event planner or wedding planner always looks like lots of fun in movies, after all your work revolves around planning and attending parties, what’s not to love? The thing is, like most jobs it can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of work.

Event Management is a dynamic and fast paced industry involving many different responsibilities. A typical event planner is in charge of coordinating all sorts of stuff and from start to finish…the first person there and generally the last to leave. While there are fun aspects to being an event planner, there are also disadvantages too.

Essential qualities you need

1. Excellent communication skills

2. Exceptional organisational skills

3. Time management and multitasking skills

4. Visualise the big picture

5. The ability to stay calm and in control

6. Quickly recognise and solve problems

7. Work with all kinds of people

8. Work long hours, including weekends and public holidays

Cons

  • Low pay unless you are a high end planner (celebrities or an exclusive planner with connections)
  • Influencer and negotiator
  • High stress
  • Long hours
  • Working for nonprofits will not make you rich
  • Things don’t go to plan

Pros

  • No education or certification requirements
  • Fun job if it suits your personality
  • Something you can do as a part time job while holding a full time career

One of the most important aspects of the job is to have a strong love of and talent for working with people and the ability to be tactful, patient, and calm with clients, vendors, and suppliers, in all situations. If that sounds like you – go for it!
