When talking about food and wine festivals I always feel a sense of over doing the adjectives, yet words still don’t seem enough to describe what an absolute corker it is walking, drinking, eating and taking it all in at a food and wine festival.

Let’s get into some sinfully indulgent stuff and celebrate the infatuation with all things gourmet.

Feast of the senses

All five senses have to be aroused and woken from their slumber when enjoying food and wine. Not only taste and smell, but getting touchy feely with the local produce, hear the sounds of food sizzling, bands playing and see a smorgasbord of food stalls and cooking demonstrations. Picture a sunny afternoon in a serene setting, great wine and superb food is being served to you while soft classical music starts playing - this could be a Woody Allen movie.

Anyone hungry?

What to expect from a food and wine festival? Everything! Amazing fresh and locally sourced food, chefs participating and  hosting everything from cooking demos to food and drink tastings, cookbook signings, blazing bbq pits, gourmet food vans, stalls and long lazy lunches in seaside restaurants.

Depending on where you are and what food and wine festival you’re attending, generally it’s all about experiencing what the region has to offer. Expect to sample some of the very best local produce, be it seafood, cheeses, fruit and veg, organic meats and most likely prepared by one of the many star chefs that will be there.

Food and wine festivals are a great chance to watch the best local and interstate chefs and restaurateurs on stage as they cook delectable dishes live – great viewing to learn their hints and tips for recreating the same dishes at home.

There will also be food trucks everywhere serving mouth-watering international street food from around the globe. If you don’t fancy a full on meal with six different dishes and six different wines, these vans are the perfect offerings to mooch, munch and sip.

Sip and mingle

A food and wine festival is always an event to remember… that is if you spat out all the wine you tasted… or if you’re anything like me, you drank every little sip that passed your lips. Festival goers are always spoilt for choice and like the food; the wine generally comes from the area or very close by.

You can choose to mooch about listening to entertainment drinking wine or you can sit down to a full degustation meal with at least seven different wines to accompany seven different dishes. There will be plenty of wine show tastings where medals will be awarded. Here you can taste all the wines and decide your favourite while grazing on generous platters of delicious local produce.

Every festival comes with great entertainment where you can sip, nosh and meander. Or if you’re a real wine taster and would like to know how to really taste the wine remember to, tip, side view, tilted view, swirl and sniff.

If you’re there to enjoy … swig it back!
